A loan of $4,800 helped a member to buy a new sewing machine, fabric and raw materials.

Nasrin's Group's story

Nasrin is a 36-year-old Iraqi woman. She is married and a mother of 3 children. For the past 4 years, she has been working from her home, using her sewing skills to help support her family.

In the past, Nasrin – as member of a group – has successfully applied, received and repaid a Relief International Microfinance Iraq loan which she used to improve her work area.

Nasrin now took a new loan from Relief International Microfinance Iraq to be able to buy a new sewing machine, fabric and raw materials.

Relief International Microfinance Iraq offers "group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.

Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about this borrower has been altered for their protection. RI-Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers.
