A loan of $200 helped to buy work tools.

Tomas Fernando's story

Tomas, 55, knows that the quality of work he provides is one of the secrets to getting ahead. He lives in Ica, a growing city that has seen a lot of investment over the last few years, investment that has contributed to the development of the local economy.

Tomas delivers construction materials to job sites. He works from 9:00 in the morning to 6:00 in the afternoon, delivering materials to an average of 11 customers a day. He wanted to be an engineer when he left high school, but his family didn't have enough money to send him to college. He started working as a laborer on construction sites because that was the closest he could get to what he really wanted to do.

Tomas has an idea for a gardening business now, but he needs tools for it. He also wants to buy new tools for his construction work because the tools he has are old and worn. He is applying to Kiva lenders to help him buy the tools he needs. He hopes to save enough money to buy a handcart that he can use to carry all of his construction materials.

His goal for the future is to buy a truck that he can use for his deliveries, something that would make his work much easier.
