A loan of $375 helped to buy bags of fertilizer.

Modesto's story

Modesto, 56 years old, is married to Martha, who is 45 years old. As the result of this relationship, they have 4 children. They live in their own home in the Torrerumi community in the district of Sivia. Modesto is a kindhearted man with a strong desire to achieve his objectives, such as achieving that his children become professionals. To achieve that goal he needs to invest a good amount of money. The only income he has is the production that he is able to obtain from his plantations of cacao and coffee. To obtain good production, he devotes himself daily to keeping his plot of land clean, doing the required maintenance work on the land, and fertilizing his plot as needed. Due to the age of his field, the soil is now lacking in nutrients. For this reason fertilization is inevitable. Modesto is happy with his production at the moment because he is able to sell his products at a reasonable price that compensates him for all of the work he puts in to his production.

Some day he would like to open a grocery store.

This is his first loan with Kiva’s partner, MFP, and he commits to making all of his payments on time. Modesto is happy because his communal bank does a top-quality job.

He will invest the 1,000 Peruvian Nuevo Soles (PEN) in the maintenance of his plot of cacao. To maintain the plot, he will buy fertilizer.
