A loan of $1,650 helped to buy fish and clothing.

Elena Mariana's story

The members of the San Pedro community bank meet every two weeks in the neighborhood of the same name, in the city of Manta. This city is well known for its beautiful beaches which are very popular year round. It is a city with many tourist attractions and a beauty which is second to none.

This is where Elena lives. Elena is 42 years old and lives with her common-law husband. The couple have three children who are 20, 19 and 14 years old. They all still live at home and are attending university and high school. Elena's husband is a salesman.

Elena works as a teacher at an elementary school in the city and sells clothing on weekends. She also sells to her work colleagues and to mothers who come to the school where she works. Her husband sells fish. Three or four times a week they go to the beaches in the city where the fishing boats arrive. They buy fish and then take it and deliver it to different restaurants in the city. The couple have been in business for more than 12 years.

Elena will use this loan to invest in her two businesses. She will buy fish and clothing. She has been a member of her community bank for 13 years and she likes it because of the help that she has received from the institution.

Elena's dreams are to buy a car and to have a place in her home from which she can make her sales.
