Julianah is a farmer and a resident of Kitale town in Western Kenya. She is aged 51, married and has 6 children of middle ages, with the last two still schooling. She has been in farming for 29 years, producing mainly maize in large scale for the local market.
Julianah has requested a loan of 30,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy poultry birds. She says the venture into poultry farming will enable her to spread her farming risk as well as supplement the family diet with eggs in addition to providing income to buy other foodstuff not produced within the farm.
She is worried about the low prices for farm produce within the local markets.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
