A loan of $4,075 helped a member to buy fish and shellfish.

Los Unidos (Cuenca) Group's story

The "Los Unidos" is made up of 7 women and 2 men. They live in different parts of Cuenca city, the capital of the province of Azuay. Azuay is known as the "Athens of Ecuador"; it is the country's cultural centre, named a UNESCO World Heritage site in December 1999. The residents are kind, gentle, and maintain the traditions of their ancestors. The group members are very hard-working and strive every day to improve their household conditions and to succeed.
Señora Nelly, age 38, is one of the group members. She is in a common-law marriage and has four children ages 15, 12, 3, and 10 months. Their oldest two children are in school. Her husband works as a policeman, and they do not have their own home; they rent.
Nelly has worked as a kitchen helper for three years. She works Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
This is her first loan with this communal bank. She was invited by a colleague. She will invest this loan in the purchase of fish and shellfish to start this business.
Her goal is to have her own home.
