Mariam's story

Mariam is 40 years old, married and the mother of 6 children. She lives in a nuclear family in the Secoura district of Ségou town. She has no formal education but instead started working at a very young age selling cereals at her mother's side at the weekly market in Konodimini. After several years apprenticeship with her mother, she started her own business in the same sector. She has been selling cereals for 15 years and has extensive experience in this line of work. Her high sales volume is due to her good understanding of how the sector works. She sells her merchandise for cash to a clientèle mainly made up of women. Mariam is requesting this new loan in order to be able keep up with customer demand and increase her profits. She has been with Soro Yiriwaso for 66 months and has already fully repaid 5 previous group loans and 3 individual ones. She is on her 4th individual loan which she plans to use to buy 1 ton of millet. She gets her supplies in Konodimini. Mariam sells her merchandise to her customers for cash or credit. With this loan, she anticipates being able to earn a monthly profit of 60 000 FCFA. The profits from her business will allow her to repay this loan and diversify her business activities and take up sheep-fattening.
