A loan of $425 helped to buy 30 kilos of yarn to make hammocks and bags that have been requested by customers.

Nellys Yolanda's story

Nellys, 39, is a married woman who has three children between the ages of 12 and 17 who currently are studying in the town where they live. She has her business making handicrafts, especially backpacks, bags, and hammocks, which she learned to make through the cultural tradition of her family, for whom vertical loom weaving is their most basic and very well developed ability.

In her home, she and her husband, who also works as a bricklayer, work in this business as the best way to generate income to support their household. The products they sell most are backpacks and hammocks, mostly by customer request. Her family group also helps her distribute them in various towns in the region.

Her dream is to manage to expand her business and find a commercial place where she also can offer various merchandise such as clothes and footwear that she will combine with the crafts she does, to give it value with applications made with her own hands.

Currently she is requesting a Kiva loan, her first financing from Fundación Mario Santo Domingo, with which she will buy 30 kilos of yarn to make hammocks and bags that her customers have requested. In this way she will be successful because her sales are guaranteed and in the hands of her most profitable customers.
