A loan of $1,100 helped to buy basic household products.

Beatriz María's story

Every two weeks, the members of the 'Nueva Ilusión' community bank meet in Cadi, in Colon parish, in the city of Portoviejo. This place is known for its hard-working people who farm and raise livestock.

Here we meet 30-year-old Beatriz who lives with her common-law husband and has two children who are 9 and 2 years old. Her eldest is in school. Her husband is a trader.

Beatriz has a small grocery store in her home where she sells a little of everything. Although her store is small, she stocks everything as her customers are very important and she always tries to ensure that they are fully satisfied. She works every day, from 6.30am to 6.00pm. She likes her business because it makes her good profits and she doesn't have to leave the house which means that she is able to care for her children. She has been in this business for more than 6 years and she uses each loan to try and improve her business.

Beatriz will use this loan to buy more basic household products for her store. She is a founding member of her community bank and she likes it because the loans have helped her a lot.

Beatriz's dream is to have a much larger store.
