A loan of $775 helped to buy animal feed and seeds.

María Inés's story

María is a member of the Vegaspamba community bank. She lives in Vegaspamba district, in the city of Cuenca. This is a place of abundant vegetation and beautiful scenery. The locals raise animals, make handicrafts and farm. They are noted for being very hard-working.

María is 60 years old. She is married and has nine adult children. Eight of her children are married and live independently. One of her daughters is a single mother and lives at home with María's two grandchildren. They share household expenses. María's husband works in agriculture. They do not own their own home but rent instead.

María takes care of her housework and, as she is at home, she raises cattle, pigs, guinea pigs and hens. In addition she sows vegetables, some of which she sells and some of which her household consumes. She has also been making rope for 20 years. She learned the trade from her mom.

María is a founding member of her community bank. She will invest her new loan in buying feed for her animals and seeds for her vegetable gardens.

María's dream is to own her own home.
