A loan of $1,500 helped a member to buy thread.

Jardines De Paute (Paute) Group's story

The 'Jardines de Paute' community bank has seven [female] members who live in different parts of Paute canton. This canton is located in the north-east of Azuay province. Its climate and scenery have made it a tourist destination. It has a mild subtropical climate. Most of Paute's workforce are engaged in agricultural work. Orchard work and [plant] nursery maintenance are very important fields, as is small-scale livestock raising. Some flower export companies have settled in Paute region. Another source of work is the production of brandy and furniture manufacturing. The locals, just like our clients, are hard-working people and are always searching for a better future.

One of the members of this group is 56-year-old Inés. She is a single mother and has five adult children who are married and live independently. The house in which she lives belongs to one of her children.

When she was 18 years old, Inés did a course in embroidery. This enabled her to set up her own business, embroidering and making bedspreads. As she works from home, she also raises guinea pigs, chickens and pigs.

This is Inés' second loan as a member of her community bank and she will invest her money in buying thread so that she can continue in her business. Her goal is to buy a plot of land.

The child in the photo is the son of one of the group's members.

In this group: Aurora De Las Mercedes, Rosa Aurora, Rocio Victoria, Nube Del Rocio, Rosa Elvira, Ines Carmelina, Nube Del Rocio
