Alberto is noted for being very hard-working and always wanting to make progress in life. He learned how to farm from his father at a very young age and worked together with his father growing vegetables. Alberto's parents have now passed away and, as an inheritance, they left him the land which they used to grow crops on. As a result, Alberto's harvests are now his source of income. Alberto grows vegetables, especially beans, and has big customers who buy his products from him at a very good price. Alberto would like to increase the variety of crops that he grows and would like to buy seeds and fertilizers so that he can start growing new vegetables. Right now, he does not have enough capital to make these purchases and so he hopes to receive a loan which will enable him to buy seeds and fertilizers to grow his new vegetables.

Alberto hopes that his income will increase significantly as he will be able to offer his customers more products. He dreams of having a large plot of crops which will provide him with large harvests. He would also like to become well known for the quality of his crops. Alberto dreams that, when his business grows, he will be able to provide work to the most needy people who do not have any work opportunities.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
