A loan of $1,000 helped to buy supplies for her beauty salon.

Liliana Beatriz's story

The La Unidas Somos Mas community bank meets twice a month in the Ecuadorean canton of Rocafuerte. Rocafuerte is known for a traditional sweet that is famous around the country.

Our member, Liliana, is 25 years old. She is partnered and has two children, 7- and 2-years old, respectively, the oldest of whom is in school. Liliana's partner is a truck driver. She is a busy young woman with all of the responsibility that goes with running a household. Even so, she has opened her own salon, applying the skills that she learned at a local beauty school several years ago.

Liliana operates the business in a room of her house. Among other services, she cuts and dyes hair and paints nails. She is slowly buying the tools that she needs to operate the business. She started the salon 3 years ago and tells us that she is happy with her progress.

Liliana will use this loan to buy the supplies--dyes, shampoos, hairspray, nail varnish, etc.--she needs to run her business. This is the banks' third round of funding. Liliana is the president of the group and says that its members are supportive of one another.

Her goal is to open a larger salon.
