El Porvenir De Junín (Junín) Group's story

The “El Porvenir de Junín” (Junín’s Future) communal bank meets every two weeks in Junín Canton which is known for its kind and hardworking residents and because the best “aguardiente” [a distilled spirit] of the province and of Ecuador is distilled here.

The group has 11 women and 2 men who decided to join together to form this communal bank which will help them very much to improve their small businesses. They carry out a variety of activities such as commerce, service and food sales, among others.

One of the members of this group is Nelly, 29. She’s in a common law relationship and has three children who are 10, 8 and 6 years old; all three attend school. Her husband is a merchant.

She is a great housewife who is also a merchant; she sells all types of clothes. On the weekend she sets up a small stand downtown taking advantage of market days which is when she sells the most. On non-market days she sells door to door. She goes to Guayaquil to buy merchandise each time she needs it. She’s had her business 8 years and has always done very well.

She will use this loan to buy clothes especially seasonal items like: bathing suits, Bermuda shorts and t-shirts. Her goal is to continue forward with her business and in the communal bank where she’s very happy.
