Gema Katherine's story

The communal bank "Ángel Gabriel" meets every two weeks in Colorado in the Montecristi Canton, known for its rich pre-colonial culture and crafts, both nationally and internationlly. It is also famous for the "Panama" straw hat.

Here we meet Gema, 20, who is a single mother of a 4-year-old daughter who is her reason for living. She lives with her parents and has been in the communal bank for two cycles and likes the easy loan terms.

As a young mother she is involved in various activities to make sure her daughter has everything she needs. Gema works in the city of Manta for a distributor of personal and household products. Since she can buy products at a good price she set up her own business and sells them from a small stall in her home. Her mother helps out working the stall when Gema is working elsewhere. She has been in business for a year and it is going well for her. Her best-selling products are costume jewelry and carnival items.

This loan will be used to buy costume jewelry, balloons, piñatas, party decorations and some carnival items.

Her dream is to become her own distributor.
