Salma Paola's story

Salma is 20 years old and was born in the city of Barranquilla. She completed her bachelor studies and started her family at age 17. She’s a young woman who’s been with her life’s partner for two years. Each day they awake, determined to work persistently in order to achieve a better future so that her son can be successful.

Salma began gaining experience, making foam decorations, when she was a young girl and has had a workshop for three years. She makes crafts for shops and other businesses in the city center. Her goal is to have her own home in the future, but her greatest challenge is obtaining the necessary capital so that she can respond to her customer demand. This is the reason she’s requested a Kiva loan through Fundación Mario Santo Domingo, which she will use to buy foam, paints, silicone, and frost material in quantity. This investment will allow her to take advantage of the Barranquilla carnivals, which is the time when most of her products sell. Her success lies in her knowledge of the art, of the market, and knowing that this investment will allow her to make a profit by responding to her customer demand, which she always plans to respond to in a timely manner.
