A loan of $400 helped to buy livestock.

María Marlene's story

María is a member of the communal bank "Nuevo Porvenir" and she lives in the Cumbe parish which is 24 kilometers south of the city of Cuenca. Here there are livestock farms with great pastures, old haciendas and modern buildings. The people are kind and gentle, and maintain the local culture and traditions.

Maria is 45, single, and has four children, ages 27, 23, 16 and 13. The eldest two work and help out economically. Her third child has a disability and her youngest daughter is in school in the city. She does not have her own home and lives with her mother, sharing household expenses.

She works in agriculture and farms her own land and other people's land. What she grows on her own land is for household consumption. She also raises livestock.

This is her second loan through the communal bank and she plans to use it to buy livestock. Her goal is to expand her livestock business.
