A loan of $1,100 helped to buy ice-cream.

María Carmita's story

In Crucita Parish in Portoviejo Canton meet the members of the “Crucita” communal bank. This location is noted for the beautiful beaches that surround it that are visited by national and international tourists; it’s knows as “Crucita la Bella” [Crucita the Beautiful].

María, 52, lives here. She’s single but from a relationship she had many years ago she has a son who is now married. He, his wife and two minor children who are our friend’s joy, live with her.

She has an ice-cream shop at home where she sells Pingüino brand ice-cream. She works every day from 8am until 8pm and has been in business 20 years. She was one of the first people to open this type of business in her locality and thanks to God has remained; this is how she was able to support her son. Now, he has his own job and can support himself.

This loan is to buy ice-cream since the beach season is approaching and business improves considerably during this season. She’s been in the communal bank since the beginning and likes it because of the help they always give her with the loans and this is why she’s stayed in the institution for so many years. Her dream is to continue working and that the season is a very good one.
