María Mabel's story

The San Patricio Community Bank meets every 15 days in the Cuba barrio in the city of Manta, which is known for its beautiful beaches and being a place of unmatched beauty with many tourist attractions. It is here we find María, who is 22, single and lives with her parents. She studies engineering and marketing at the university in Manta. There have been 10 loan cycles with the community bank and she is the group's secretary. She enjoys being a part of it because of the help she gets; thanks to the loans she can continue her studies. María has a small convenience store in her parents home, selling a little bit of everything like clothes, shoes, phone cards, stuffed animals and gifts, as well as reloading phone cards, which earns a little extra. Currently she is selling clothing via catalog as much at her store as at the university, where she has a number of customers. She has more than one year of experience with the business, which she started with one of the loans the bank received. With this loan, she plans to purchase clothing, shoes, perfumes, phone cards and other products to sell in her store. Her dream is to finish her studies and become a great businesswoman.
