Beatrice is 33 years old, married, and has five children. She is a farmer, which she has been doing for seven years, producing and selling milk, eggs, and maize to the local market in her hometown of Kitale, Western Kenya.
Beatrice is requesting a loan for 102,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo, which she will use to expand her farming business in two areas: dairy and poultry farming. She will use 52,000 KES to buy and insure a dairy cow and the rest to expand her poultry business by buying more birds.
Beatrice states that her seven years of experience in farming has proved to her that someone can rely on farming for her family upkeep. Her major challenge in farming remains the rampant animal diseases but she is optimistic that she will be owning five dairy cows in five years.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
