Marcela’s a member of the “Uniendo Fuerzas” (Uniting Strength) communal bank which has 7 responsible, hardworking members; Marcela is group President. She’s 42 years old, separated and has two children that she still supports. With the wish to improve she started her own business making crafts like ribbon embroidery, aluminum embossing, painting on glass, among others. She works based on prior customer orders. The business has benefitted her because she tells us that with the skills learned she also teaches crafts classes thus earning extra household income. Thanks to this business she’s been able to improve her family’s quality of life.

In order to continue improving, she’s asked for a loan to buy ribbon, fabric, paint, aluminum and brushes to make her crafts. Marcela’s wish is to equip a space at home where she can display her manual arts.

The “Uniendo Fuerzas” communal bank is grateful for the loan granted and commits to continue working well. Marcela appears in the center of the group wearing a white blouse printed with flowers. We have inserted Yemima’s photo in the group photo.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
