A loan of $1,075 helped to stock his natural medicines business.

Pedro Luis's story

Pedro, 23, has lived all his life in San Miguel de los Bancos, one of 9 cantons in Pichincha, an Ecuadorea province that includes the country's capital city. There are 52 "comunidades", "recintos" and "cooperativas distribuidas" [local geographical entities] in the canton, along with important resources such as the Mindo Nambillo National Forest. Much of the canton is pasture land and ranching is an important business. Local farmers grow palmito, sugar cane, platanos and fruit on small plots here. Pedro has lived on his own for a year. He has a son, but the son doesn't live with him.

Pedro's parents have a natural medicines business and he learned the business from them. He opened his own shop 5 years ago and has made good progress. He wants to expand the business now and he needs a loan because he can't add the inventory he wants without one. He wants to increase the range of merchandise that he sells so that he can increase his income. Fundacion Alternativa, the bank that is helping him with the loan, has assessed the business and determined that Pedro is a solid, trustworthy businessman who can repay the loan in the agreed-upon time.

This optimistic young man wants to build a successful business that will provide him with a good income. His goals are a better quality of life and to one day go to university.
