A loan of $2,025 helped a member to pay school fees for his children.

Mohamed I.'s Group's story

These are teachers of a primary school in Kenema city. Teachers of this noble institution have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone, to seek a loan for the entire group. With the help of this loan, this group of teachers will be able to improve on their standard of living.

Thirty-five-year-old Mohamed is the leader of this group of teachers. Mohamed was born in a place call Benduma Jewai. He is married and has 10 children, five in primary school and five in secondary schools. Mohamed is a teacher and has been in the teaching profession for more than 10 years now. He has requested this loan in order to pay school fees for his children and invest the rest in business.

School staff from this institution, like many other schools staff within SMT’s operational areas, comes to SMT to apply for loans. With the help of these loans, they can accomplish some certain tasks that they would otherwise have not being able to accomplish with their mere salaries alone. But with the help of this loan, some can pay school fees for their children; others can use the loan to buy pieces of furniture, a plot of land, house-building materials, or invest in business. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and pays SMT on their behalf.
