A loan of $1,825 helped a member to buy house-building materials: bags of cement, iron corrugated zincs, nails, etc. for the construction of a family house.

Roston's Group's story

These are teachers of a primary school in Kenema city. Teachers of this noble institution have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone, to seek a loan of SLL 3,150,000 for the entire group. With the help of this loan, this group of teachers will be able to improve on their standard of living.

Forty-seven-year-old Roston is the leader of this group of teachers. Roston was born in a place call Kpuwabu. He is married and has four children, two in primary school, one in secondary and the other is not attending school.

Roston is a teacher and has been in the teaching profession for 20 years now. He has requested this loan in order to buy house-building materials: bags of cement, iron corrugated zincs, nails, etc., for the construction of a family house.

School staff from this institution, like many other schools staff within SMT’s operational areas, comes to SMT to apply for loans. With the help of these loans, they can accomplish some certain tasks that they would otherwise have not being able to accomplish with their mere salaries alone. But with the help of this loan, some can pay school fees for their children; others can use the loan to buy pieces of furniture, a plot of land, house-building materials, or invest in business. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and pays SMT on their behalf.
