A loan of $200 helped to acquire his driver's license.

Yerson Jose's story

Yerson Jose is 22 and lives in Ica, in La Tinguiña District, a generous land characterized by its warm climate and better known as “The Land of Eternal Sun” since even in winter you can always see the sun. Moreover its people are very friendly and hospitable and harvest the best grapes in the region, with which they make one of their flagship products, “Pisco” (grape brandy).

In his free time Yerson enjoys listening to music, which is greatly relaxing and, he says, helps him to work much better. As is well known, Peru is acknowledged as having the most delicious food in the world and one of the dishes that Yerson likes a great deal is the very delicious “Lomo Saltado” (beef stir fry with onions and potatoes).

Yerson only studied until the fifth grade of secondary school because his parents lacked sufficient income, however he would have loved to have studied to become a teacher. He is a bachelor and works carrying passengers in a motor tax through the streets of his district. He works 10 hours a day. In one day he can transport around 20 passengers and this enables him to earn an average of approximately 50 soles a day and on a good day up to 100 soles, which helps with additional expenses maintaining his vehicle since the number of people needing this service has increased.

Yerson is infinitely grateful because, thanks to help from KIVA lenders, he will be able to pay the fees to acquire his driver’s license and keep his motor taxi better maintained. This will enable him to improve his earnings since passengers will feel more confident using the vehicle he operates. In this way he will also avoid fines for driving without a license. Moreover in a few months he will be able to realize his great dream of "buying himself an automobile.”
