The “Unidas de San Antonio” Communal Bank was started through promotions that were held in the neighborhood. All the members are from the same area; they are neighbors and acquaintances from the neighborhood. The objective of each one of them is to work, promote a spirit of solidarity and reach the highest level of the program through the efforts of all.

Sra. Ana is the president of the group. She has a stand in front of her house where she sells everything she has produced on the small farm she has. She tells us that her work is hard since she needs to harvest and then plant. In addition to this she is at the mercy of infestations and other problems. However, despite this, she enjoys what she does because it is honest, dignified work.

She is requesting a loan to buy seeds and fertilizer to use on her fields, which are her source of livelihood. She is very grateful to the Fundación for this opportunity they are giving her, since many institutions would not do so.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
