A loan of $375 helped to buy merchandise for her grocery store.

Martha's story

Martha is 56 years old and lives in Ica, a city currently characterized by increased investment, not only in agricultural exports but also in the opening of new commercial centers that create many employment opportunities for residents of Ica.

In her free time, Martha enjoys reading. It is well known that Peru has the most delicious foods in the world, and one of Martha's favorite dishes is pork cracklings. She studied until the second year of secondary school and would have liked to study law. Martha is the single mother of four children who are 24, 21, 19, and 15 years old. They have all studied through the fourth year of secondary school.

Martha is a merchant who has a bodega [small grocery store] where she sells staple goods. Martha works approximately ten hours a day. She was encouraged to open this type of business because there aren't many bodegas in the area where she lives, so she is able to average 15 customers a day, which brings in an average of approximately 40 nuevos soles per day. On a good day, she can earn up to 60 nuevos soles. Martha thinks her business is successful because she offers good quality products and treats her customers kindly. This will help her to stock her bodega with a variety of products so that her customers will feel pleased with the merchandise offered. With time and a great deal of dedication and enthusiasm, she will be able to achieve her greatest dream: "To have her own pizzeria in the center of Ica."
