A loan of $1,000 helped to buy soda, juice and sandwiches.

Wendy Pamela's story

The 'La Amistad' (Friendship) community bank meets every two weeks in the beautiful city of Calceta. This city is known as 'Calceta la sin par' (Calceta, the city with no equal) owing to the beauty of its women and because, so far as its residents are concerned, there is no more beautiful city in the world.

Here we meet Wendy. She is 25 years old, married, and has a 7-year-old son who is in school. She is currently six months pregnant with her second child. Her husband owns a taxi in which he works.

Wendy works in partnership with her husband. In addition to the taxi, they also have an entertainment center where young people and adults can have fun and de-stress from their work or their studies. Wendy works there every day. The premises are rented as they have not yet been able to buy premises of their own. Wendy also sells soft drinks, soda, sandwiches and video games there. She has been in her business for six years and it is doing very well.

Wendy has been a member of her community bank for three loan cycles. She is the bank's secretary and she likes it because they loans are quick and very helpful.

Wendy's dream is to own her own premises so that she no longer has to pay rent.
