Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

A loan of $775 helped to buy chickens, pigs and feed for her animals.

Carmen's story

Carmen is a member of the communal bank Arco Iris. She lives in the community of Tres Marías, which belongs to the parish of Turi. This parish overlooks the city of Cuenca. The people there work growing crops, raising animals, and running businesses.

She is 34 years old, is married, and has a one-and-a-half-year-old boy. Her husband works in construction as a bricklayer. They own their own house.

She attends to the household chores and works cleaning houses from Monday through Saturday, working half-day shifts. At home she also raises pigs, chickens and Guinea pigs.

This is her third loan with the communal bank and will invest the funds in chickens, pigs and feed for her animals.

Her goal is to build a house for her son.
