María Nieves's story

María’s a member of the “Nuevos Horizontes” (New Horizons) communal bank. She lives in Sayausi Parish in the city of Cuenca. This city is characterized by the four rivers that bathe it and since December, 1999 has been a Cultural Patrimony of Humanity. Its residents maintain the culture and traditions of its peoples.

María is 48 years old, divorced and has 7 children. Four of them are married and live on their own and one of her children works and help her out economically. One son is going to secondary school and her youngest attends the local little elementary school in the city. The house they live in is her property.

María works farming her own land. She grows vegetables that she sells in the city’s market. She’s been in this line of work for 20 years. She also raises cattle, pigs and guinea pigs.

She’s been a member of the communal bank for six years and will use her new loan to buy manure for her crops. Her goal is to continue growing in her business.
