A loan of $950 helped to buy ingredients such as chicharrón and charrasca [pork chitterlings and steak].

Maria Magdalena's story

María, an inhabitant of the city of Estelí, is married and is the mother of three grown-up children. She is still a merchant as a 58-year-old, and has been since a young age. She is a very active woman who sells food, in particular churrasco and chicharrón [steak and pork chitterlings]. She has been in this business for over twenty years, which is how she supported her children. It was when she turned thirty that she decided to sell only churrasco and chicharrón. She requested this loan to buy ingredients like chicharrón and churrasco to sell wholesale. These ingredients are used to make some of the population's most traditional and frequently-ordered dishes like the famous and popular vigorón [Nicaraguan pork dish served with yucca], as well as tortillas with salad and chicharrón. One of her plans is to purchase a used car for buying and selling pork so she can improve her business, making it more profitable so she can have a higher standard of living.
