A loan of $1,100 helped to buy perfume, cream, cosmetics, and fishing supplies.

Paola Katherine's story

The Virgen del Mar communal bank meets every two weeks in the pretty beach community of San Mateo in the city of Manta, known for its beautiful beaches that are well visited year round by native and foreign tourists. The majority of the residents here work in fishing and maritime jobs.

Here we met Paola. She is 28 years old and married, and has two children from this relationship, ages 5 and 1. The oldest child is in the first year of elementary school. Her husband is a fisherman. She is a housewife who works selling Yanbal products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfume, and women's accessories) to have her own income. She sells door-to-door and works three days a week. She has been doing this work for five years.

This time she is also going to use the loan to buy fishing supplies such as nets, harpoons, fuel, and other materials for her husband, since he has a small boat on which he works maritime jobs every day. This loan is to buy perfume, cream, cosmetics, and fishing supplies.

She has been with the communal bank for four years and she likes it because of the low interest rates they charge for the loans. Her dream is to have a new motorboat for her husband's business since the one he has is very small.
