A loan of $625 helped to build a pig pen and buy pigs.

Marlene Maribel's story

Marlene is a 19 year old single woman who lives with her mother in a rural Santo Domingo settlement within the “Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas” province, one of the most densely populated in Ecuador. It attracts many people because it has many monuments around the city, among them is the “Monumento al Indio Colorado” monument in the sector known as “Y del Colorado.” Santo Domingo is a special place, with wonderful, hardworking, enterprising people who work tirelessly toward progress and development, and who receive tourists with open arms and demonstrate their wonderful culture and environment. Marlene works and goes to school. She’s also been raising pigs for the past four years to help out with the household finances. She rises very early in the morning to feed her pigs before going to school, and then returns home to tend to her livestock. She says that there was a time when two of her pigs got sick and she had to euthanize them. This was difficult for her since she lost her investment. She would like a loan so that she can finish building her pig pen and buy more pigs. In this way she plans to increase her income so that she can continue her studies and have a better quality of life.
