Nasiba is a young married woman and a mother of three children. Prior to the marriage, she was studying to be a jewelry maker and is now involved in a fine jewelry business. She makes women's national jewelry from gold with unusual designs. Nasiba sells her goods at a market and primarily makes the jewelry to-order. She has a large catalog of samples for every taste. She does not yet have apprentices because she has a small child and would not have time for apprentices. In the future, Nasiba plans to open her own shop and teach her trade to young women. She has been partnering with us since 2010 and previously obtained a loan to purchase scrap to make her jewelry. This is now her second time obtaining financing from us, and this is another loan to be used for household buildings. Because Nasiba's husband is currently working outside the city limits, and their house construction has began, Nasiba needs our loan.

About MDO Arvand
MDO Arvand is one of the leading microfinance institutions in Tajikistan, offering small loans to entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses. This makes an enormous difference in a country, which is not only the poorest in Central Asia, but also home to a population where two-thirds live below the poverty line. Today, Tajikistan's economy literally depends on remittances being sent from family members working abroad in Russia because there are so few local job opportunities.
Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
