Rita, 47, is a small businesswoman. She lives with her husband and three children.

For 15 years she has worked in a garment factory, and in recent years she has started producing clothing herself - baby clothes and women's clothes - as well as selling catalog products. It's very important to her to maintain her financial independence and have her own income. This has empowered her and given her self-worth that allows her to confront frequent chauvinistic comments and attitudes from her husband.

She has a lot of potential with the foundation because of her payment ethic and positive attitude. She's looking to improve conditions for herself, her family and her business. She is surprised herself by how much her business has grown in terms of assets and legacy.

Every year for prevention purposes, she has a physical exam and x-rays like a mammogram, ultrasound and dentistry work. This year she has asked the foundation for financial support to complete them.

More information about this loan

In Costa Rica, funding for microfinance institutions is hard to come by, and many institutions find themselves having difficulty growing and reaching all the demand for loans that exist. Kiva works with Fundacion Mujer because it attends a very marginalized population in Costa Rica, with a specific focus on women. In addition to the loan, Fundacion Mujer provides specialized training programs for their borrowers on everything from computer classes to salon training. Because of the difficulty in obtaining capital in Costa Rica, Fundacion Mujer cannot serve all the women that need loans. Therefore Kiva plays a unique role in helping Fundacion Mujer grow its portfolio and reach borrowers it otherwise would not be able to.

About Fundacion Mujer:
