A loan of $375 helped to purchase virtual cell phone credits (Movistar and Claro).

Elizabeth Marlene's story

Elizabeth lives and works in the famous Nazca, or Nasca, Perú. The city is well known for the legendary Nazca Lines- a series of ancient, immense and inexplicable geoglyphs etched into the desert surrounding the city, generally attributed to the Nazca culture, which inhabited the region from 300-800 AD. As such, the city attracts a considerable amount of tourism. However, Nazca is also known for its hardworking people, who have persevered despite frequent earthquakes, tsunamis, and a high level of poverty in the region.

Elizabeth is separated and has a 15-year-old son who is in secondary school. She makes a living selling soft drinks and virtual Movistar [a local cellular service company] cell phone credits. She started with a small amount of capital that her uncle gave her. Elizabeth is a hardworking and diligent woman with a great desire to help her son get ahead. She started the business five years ago and makes an average of 200 PEN a week.

With the 1,000 PEN loan from Kiva she will invest in the purchase of virtual cell phone credits (Claro and Movistar [local cellular service companies]). In this way she will have more income to be able to give her son a better quality of life. One of her dreams is to have her own house and that her son will become a great professional. Her loan advisor believes that she is a good client and that she will make her repayments on time.
