Margarita's story

Margarita is 47 years old, single, and has five children. She lives in Guaranda in Bolívar Province with her children (ages 28, 24, 22, 18, and 9).

Margarita is a member of the Communal Bank “Pangua” which is located in the community of Pangua Chaupiyacu and part of Guanujo parish in the canton of Guaranda. This community is 15 minutes away from the office of Cooperativa San Jose. The members of the Pangua Communal Bank work mostly in agriculture and livestock breeding, but they also engage in other business activities, such as retail and construction, in order to earn most of their income.

Margarita is a farmer who grows potatoes. She also has cattle, sheep, and pigs. Margarita has four plots of land on which she grows her crops. She lives in her own house. Her purchases and sales are conducted in Guaranda. She is requesting a loan in order to buy cattle, sheep, and compost. With the help of this loan, Margarita will be able to improve her family’s financial condition. Her dream is to buy a house in another city. The challenges she faces include the economic situation and the summer droughts.

In her free time, Margarita enjoys relaxing and knitting. Occasionally she will go out to spend time with her family and visit relatives who live far away.
