A loan of $1,200 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Maharagwe A W Group's story

Beatrice is the facilitator of the Maharagwe A W. group. Beatrice and her group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Beatrice and her group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.

Beatrice takes care of five children at home. She joined One Acre Fund in order to grow enough to secure food for her family and to have additional maize profits to send her children to school. In the recent 2011 season, Beatrice had a good maize yield, harvesting 14 bags on 1 acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Beatrice was only able to harvest 6 bags of maize on 1 acre of land.

With income from maize sales, Beatrice will invest in livestock rearing and educate her children.

In 2012, the members of Maharagwe A W. group will each plant maize plots of between ½ and 1 acre of land.
