A loan of $1,250 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Rafiki Shg Group's story

Ernest is the facilitator of the Rafiki SHG group. Ernest and his group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Ernest and his group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.

Ernest takes care of two children at home. He joined One Acre Fund in order to have additional maize profits to send his children to school and secure enough food for his children. In the recent 2011 season, Ernest had an excellent maize yield, harvesting 20 bags on 1 acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Ernest was only able to harvest 9 bags of maize on 1 acre of land.

With income from maize sales, Ernest will educate his children and save for the future.

In 2012, the members of Rafiki SHG group will each plant maize plots of between ½ and 1 acre of land.
