A loan of $2,150 helped to purchase cameras, cables, and screens.

Jorge Luis's story

In his native country, the Dominican Republic, Jorge worked at an electronics business where he was twice recognized as the most innovative employee at the company. He then moved to Mexico to study electronics and satellite systems before relocating to the United States in search of more opportunities. Jorge started working at a company that specializes in building alarm systems—this is where he got the idea to launch his own electronics business.

Four years later, Jorge’s business offers five core services including security system installation, computer repair, POS system installation, soap distribution, and marketing services for small businesses through his television programs with two TV channels in Boston. Jorge’s son works with him part-time to install alarm systems at local businesses. Today, Jorge is growing his business to serve clients in additional neighborhoods of Boston and was recently recognized as Latino Business Person of the Year by the North Shore Business Association. The impacts of the recession on other businesses have encouraged Jorge to expand and innovate by trading services with other small businesses in his area.

After attending a financial management workshop with Accion USA, Jorge applied for a loan and is using it to purchase cameras, cables, screens and other equipment in bulk. Purchasing large quantities of inventory will help keep costs down, as well as help Jorge grow his business.
