A loan of $1,075 helped a member to buy farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Akipa Shg Group's story

Margret is the facilitator of the Akipa SHG group. Margret and her group joined One Acre Fund in 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program. She is a mother to two children. She joined One Acre Fund due to One Acre Fund's low prices and in order to ensure food security for her family.

In the recent 2011 season, she had an excellent maize yield harvesting 20 bags on one an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, she was only able to harvest five bags of maize on that land. With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Margret and her group during Kenya's next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs such as fertilizer and seed is part of One Acre Fund's integrated agriculture package, which also includes training, credit, and insurance.

With the income from maize sales, Margret will build a house and invest in livestock rearing. In 2012, the members of Akipa SHG group will each plant maize plots between one half and one acre of land.
