A loan of $775 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Amani Group's story

Irene is the facilitator of the Amani group. Irene and her group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program. With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Irene and her group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance. Irene takes care of four children at home. She joined One Acre Fund in order to have additional maize profits to send her children to school and secure enough food for her children. In the recent 2011 season, Irene had a very good maize yield harvesting 7 bags on ½ an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Irene was only able to harvest 4 bags of maize on ½ acre of land. With income from maize sales, Irene will educate her children and invest in livestock rearing. In 2012, the members of Amani group will each plant maize plots of between ½ and 1 acre of land. Irene is pictured with her group members and the field officer standing on the far left.
