A loan of $775 helped to purchase fruits and vegetables.

Mercedes Mariana's story

The Banco Comunal Mujeres Unidas De Los Bajos (United Women of Los Bajos Communal Bank) meet every 15 days in Los Bajos de Montecristi, a city known both for its cultural riches and handicrafts such as Panama hats, which are known both inside and outside the country. Here we meet Señora Mercedes, age 46. She is a single mother with one adult son who still lives with her with his family.

Mercedes has been with the communal bank for two cycles. She likes it because of the opportunity of receiving help that the institution offers.

In order to earn a daily living, Mercedes is engaged in the sale of fruits and vegetables. She works every day from 5:00 until 11:00. She leaves very early in the morning for the largest market in order to buy the best products and then return to her location and travel around on a tricycle offering her products for sale. She has been involved in this business for more than five years and thanks to the business is able to get ahead.

This loan is for the purchase of fruits and vegetables. She has been in the communal bank since the beginning and likes it because with the loans she can finance herself without having to pay high interest. Her dream is to buy a car so that she can go to other places to sell her products.
