A loan of $2,975 helped a member to buy perfumes, creams and cosmetics.

Las Vecinas (Cuenca) Group's story

The communal bank "Las Vecinas" is comprised of nine members who all work in different activities which allow them to cover household expenses and help their families get ahead. They live in different parts of the city of Cuenca. This city has been a World Heritage site since 1999. Its mix of colonial and modern make it a beautiful city. The local people maintain their culture and traditions and are very warm-hearted and kind.

One of the members of the group is Mrs. Mercedes. She is 40 years old and married. Her husband is an auto mechanic and has his own workshop. They live in their own house.

She has been a domestic employee for three years, working Tuesday through Saturday, all day. In her free time she sells different brands of cosmetics.

This is her first loan through the communal bank which she was invited to join by a friend of hers. She plans to use the loan to buy perfumes, creams and cosmetics so she will have more variety to offer customers.

Her goal is to have her own business, something like a bazaar.

In this group: Alcira Viginia De Fátima, Silvia Karol, Susana Elizabeth, María Laura, Mariana De Jesún, Vanessa Pilar, Mercedes De Jesús, Miguel Angel, María Soledad
