Julia has had her grocery store for 18 years, she arranged an area in her home and began selling only soft drinks and saw that people asked for more items she started to stock her business with more merchandise, especially basic household goods. With her business she was able to help her children get an education and settle some basic household debts. Since Julia’s convenience store was the only one in the area she did very well for some time, unfortunately she got sick and could not operate her store, at present, she feels a bit better and wants to start over. The loan will be used to buy merchandize like soft drinks, detergents, and toilet paper; basic household goods are her best sellers. Julia hopes to keep working in her convenience store since it has helped her continue to get ahead. Julia is a member of “The Good Friendship” communal bank, which has 10 members.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
