A loan of $875 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Mwai Mwai Group's story

Receive greetings from Mwai Mwai Group in Western Kenya! This group joined Kiva partner One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.
Henry is the facilitator of the Mwai Mwai Group. He takes care of six children at home with his wife. He joined One Acre Fund in order to access fertilizer and hybrid seeds and ensure food security for his family. In the recent 2011 season, Henry had an excellent maize yield harvesting nine bags on half an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Henry was only able to harvest three bags of maize on one acre of land.
With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Henry and his group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit, and insurance.
With income from maize sales, Henry will pay for major annual expenses such as school fees. In 2012, the members of Mwai Mwai Group will each plant between half and one acre of maize.
