A loan of $1,225 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Chambikwe Group's story

Greetings from Chambikwe Group in Western Kenya! This group joined Kiva partner One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.
Francis is the facilitator of the Chambikwe Group. He takes care of eight children at home. He joined One Acre Fund in order to access fertilizer and hybrid seeds and ensure food security for his family. In the recent 2011 season, Francis had an excellent maize yield harvesting sixteen bags on half an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Francis was only able to harvest four bags of maize on half an acre of land.
With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Francis and his group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit, and insurance.
With income from maize sales, Francis will educate his children and invest in livestock rearing. In 2012, the members of Chambikwe Group will each plant between half and one acre of maize.
