A loan of $675 helped to buy fine flake salt.

Mercedes Moserrate's story

The communal bank "Virgen del Rosario" meets every two weeks in Colorado del Cantón Montecristi (Portoviejo), famous nationally and internationally for its rich colonial culture and artisan crafts. In this location most of the population is involved in making tagua (ivory palm) buttons, crafts or in some other trade.

Here we met Mrs. Mercedes, 45, who is married and has two children, both adults, who study at the university and live at home. Her husband is a driver.

She is a very enterprising woman who is involved in commerce. Three times a week, she and her husband, who has a truck, go to the city of Salinas to buy fine flake salt. They deliver to many locations throughout the province, such as Bahía de Caraquez, Manta and of course Montecristi. They have been in business for four years. On the days she doesn't travel she helps her sister in the button factory and receives a wage which provides her with extra income.

She plans to use this loan to buy fine flake salt. She has been in the communal bank for five cycles and likes the fact that the loans have such low interest rtes.

Her dream is to have a larger truck so they can transport more products.
