A loan of $1,050 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Big Brother Group's story

Ann is the facilitator of the Big Brother group. Ann and her group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Ann takes care of eight children at home. She joined One Acre Fund due to One Acre Fund’s best prices and in order to ensure food security for her family and later educate them. In the recent 2011 season, Ann had an excellent maize yield harvesting 12 ½ bags on ½ an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Ann was only able to harvest 5 bags of maize on ½ acre of land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Ann and her group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.

With income from maize sales, Ann will educate her children and invest in livestock rearing.

In 2012, the members of Big Brother group will each plant maize plots of between ½ and 1 acre of land.

In the photograph above, Ann is pictured with her group members and the Field Officer standing on the far left.
