A loan of $975 helped a member to buy farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Tumaini B Shg Group's story

Greetings from the Tumaini B SHG Group in Western Kenya! Henry is the facilitator of the group. This group joined One Acre Fund in 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Henry takes care of 14 children at home. He joined One Acre Fund due to the low prices offered by the firm and in order to access fertilizer and hybrid seeds to ensure food security for his family. In the recent 2011 season, Henry had a very good maize yield harvesting six bags on half an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Henry was only able to harvest one bag of maize on that land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Henry and his group during Kenya's next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs such as fertilizer and seed is part of One Acre Fund's integrated agriculture package, which also includes training, credit, and insurance.

With the income from maize sales, Henry will educate his children and repay his loan with the same.

In 2012, the members of Tumaini B SHG group will each plant between one half and one acre of maize.

He is pictured with his group members in the photograph above.
